Police officers need our support now more than ever. There are thousands of critically injured police officers across the US that have been forgotten. Many of them have been fired from their department simply because they can no longer afford to keep them on salary due to their injuries. There are not many organizations that support these injured officers and that is why we created the event Not All Heroes Wear Capes. This event is to honor police officers from all over the country that have been severely injured while on duty. We recognize injuries that can be seen and unseen. Several of these officers have been shot multiple times in one incident and still put the uniform on to serve and protect the citizens of our great country. The top cause of death for police officers is suicide and this event created a network for these wounded heroes in a time they need it the most. Please give these heroes the support they desperately need and undoubtedly deserve!

Houston began his Law Enforcement career in 1999 with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Corrections Officer. He graduated from the Amarillo Police Academy in 2002 and began his career on the streets. He has had a very rewarding career and has served in the areas of Friona and Pampa Texas and now proudly wears the uniform for Jacksboro Texas Police Department.

On January 6, 2015, Houston was confronted with an officer’s worst nightmare. He was shot in the face by a 12-gauge shotgun at point blank range, through a door. He says “he never saw it coming!” He and his partners had responded to a domestic disturbance and 30 minutes later he was being carried out on a stretcher. Houston said it changed his life and the life of his family. His wife Jessica and 3 children definitely had their world turned upside down. While that day could be said to be his worst, he chooses to look at it as his best. He is an unapologetic Christian, husband, father, survivor and police officer!

Houston’s life has been full of adversity. When he was young his oldest sister was murdered, his other sister committed suicide, his father died of cancer, and like many other officers been through a divorce. Houston says “it’s not your circumstance that defines you, it’s what you do with it that determines your path.” He firmly believes what Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” That has turned his life into one that has made him a survivor and not a victim.

Houston uses these circumstances to bring a message of survival and overcoming. His message is simple, the physical recovery is easy, psychological and spiritual are the hard work. He encourages all that you can make it through impossible circumstances and come out better for it!
